About F.M. Alexander (1869-1955)
The Alexander Technique got its name from the originator, the australian born F.M. Alexander. Alexander worked as a professional reciter until he was paralysed by voice problems and unable to continue his work. The only advice doctors could give him was to rest which in the end didn't help any. With enourmous curiosity and determination he started to investigate what could possibly be wrong with him and came with empirical research to his conclusions. This was the beginning of his re-education theory. As a result of his discovery he developed a method to put this to use.
Alexander began teaching his technique in the 90's of the 19th century. His experience and knowledge was, thanks to the generation that worked with him, passed on to us and strongly eriched in the past century.
In the Netherlands, the technique is popular among musicians, artists, etc. Among other people, the technique is quite unknown, despite the fact that the Dutch Nobelprize winner Nicolaas Tinbergen attributed a good deal of his speech to the tecnique.
